He has been welding for eleven years. Every morning, he positions himself in front of the arc, picks up his equipment, and begins. The bright flash of the arc is familiar to him now — something the body learns to accommodate over time, or seems to. His eyes water sometimes. They redden. He squints in the afternoon when the light is particularly harsh. He has never owned a pair of welding goggles. The workshop does not provide them, and on what he earns, buying his own has never been a realistic option.
He is not unusual. He is representative of a very large group of Nigerian workers whose daily conditions put their eyesight under pressures that most people who work behind a desk will never encounter. And the research conducted on those workers tells a story that should make every employer, policy maker, and worker in the sector stop and pay attention.
What the Numbers Show
A cross-sectional study of 646 industrial workers across cement factories, coal mines, sawmills, and iron and steel fabrication workshops in Enugu State found that 28.5% had a history of industrial accidents, and 12.5% of all workers had sustained an eye injury at work. The causes were consistent across facilities: metal chips, cement dust, fragments of wood, pieces of coal stone, and welders’ arc rays — all preventable, and all the predictable result of working without appropriate eye protection.
A separate study of welders in Port Harcourt found that 60.2% of the 500 welders examined had either a history or physical evidence of ocular injury. Flying metal chips were responsible for 68% of those injuries, with arc radiation accounting for the rest. Six in ten welders. In a single city.
The protection gap: A Lagos study of sawmill workers in Ojo found that while 78.6% of workers were aware of the risk of occupational eye injury, only 17.7% actually used eye protective devices. The most commonly cited reason was not negligence or indifference — it was unavailability. 43% said protective equipment was simply not available to them. The knowledge was there. The protection was not.
Why These Workplaces Are Particularly Dangerous
Construction sites, welding workshops, sawmills, cement factories, and fabrication yards share a set of conditions that make eye injury not just possible but statistically likely for anyone who works in them long enough without protection.
- Flying particles and debris — Grinding, drilling, hammering, and cutting all generate high-velocity particles — metal chips, wood splinters, stone fragments — that travel fast enough to penetrate the eye’s surface on contact. A metal chip from a grinding disc does not need to be large to cause a corneal laceration or embed itself in eye tissue.
- Welding arc radiation — The ultraviolet radiation produced by welding arcs causes arc eye or welder’s flash — essentially a sunburn of the cornea. It produces intense pain, tearing, and temporary vision loss, typically presenting hours after exposure. Repeated episodes cause cumulative damage to the corneal surface over time.
- Cement and chemical dust — Chronic exposure to cement dust causes significantly higher rates of pterygium and conjunctivitis compared to unexposed workers. The alkaline nature of cement also makes it capable of causing chemical burns on direct eye contact — a risk that is highest during mixing and pouring.
- Prolonged outdoor exposure — Construction workers spend long hours under direct sunlight without adequate shade or UV-protective eyewear. Cumulative ultraviolet exposure is a leading risk factor for pterygium, cataracts, and certain cancers of the eye surface.
- Sawmill dust and wood particles — Sawmill workers face a combination of wood dust, bark fragments, and high-speed debris from cutting equipment. Nigerian studies have documented chronic conjunctival disorders in this workforce resulting from persistent ocular irritation.
Who Bears the Cost When an Eye Is Injured
Occupational eye injuries do not stay at the worksite. They follow a worker home. A welder who loses useful vision in one eye may lose his livelihood entirely. A sawmill worker with a corneal ulcer from embedded wood debris faces weeks of treatment, uncertain outcomes, and an income that stops the day he cannot work. In most of Nigeria’s informal construction and manufacturing sectors, there is no sick pay, no occupational insurance, and no compensation pathway. The worker absorbs the full cost of an injury that was, in almost every case, preventable.
The research is consistent on this point: occupational eye injuries occur most frequently in the active years of life, typically between the ages of 20 and 40. The vocational and economic consequences of vision loss in this age group are enormous, both for the individual and for the family that depends on them.
What Needs to Change
The solution is not complicated. It is a pair of goggles. A face shield. A policy that requires their use and an employer who enforces it. The gap between knowing that eye injuries happen and actually preventing them is not technical — it is structural. Protective equipment costs money that informal sector workers do not have and that employers do not routinely provide.
For workers who find themselves in these environments, the practical guidance is direct: insist on eye protection before starting work. If the employer does not provide it, raise the issue. If basic goggles can be sourced at a reasonable cost, consider them as essential to the job as the tools themselves — because the tools can be replaced, and the eye cannot.
For employers, the calculation is simple. The cost of a pair of safety goggles is a fraction of the cost of losing a worker to a preventable injury, managing the aftermath, and operating with the knowledge that someone went home with less sight than they arrived with.
And for anyone who manages, supervises, or sets policy in a sector where people work with their hands in hazardous conditions, this is the question that matters: what does it cost to protect them, and why has that cost not already been paid?
